Witnessing animals suffer is always heartbreaking, but the pain of seeing them abandoned by their owners is truly unmatched.
When these animals are also pregnant, carrying unborn babies, it becomes even more devastating. Instead of receiving the care and attention they desperately need, they’re left to struggle, unsure of what the future holds.
Motherhood is already a challenge, but I can’t imagine facing it alone, in the harshness of the streets, surrounded by dirt and uncertainty.
Sadly, this was the reality for Waffles, a pit bull mom who was abandoned. Three years ago, a man saw her wandering near his home, visibly pregnant and in dire need of help.
Concerned for her well-being, he contacted Hope For Paws, a rescue organization devoted to saving animals in need.
The pit bull, clearly in distress, urgently needed help.
Hope For Paws responded swiftly, dispatching volunteers JoAnn Wiltz and Katie McKittrick to assess the situation.
When they arrived, the pit bull walked straight toward them, as if she had been waiting for their arrival. Cold, hungry, and alone, she showed complete trust in the volunteers. Without a moment’s hesitation, she climbed into their vehicle, eager to escape the harsh conditions she had endured.
The rescue team named her Waffles, and soon after arriving at the center, she was given an ultrasound to check on her puppies.
Waffles, despite her nervousness, remained calm throughout the procedure, showing nothing but trust in those helping her. To everyone’s surprise, Waffles smiled during the ultrasound. The vet confirmed that she was about to give birth any day now — likely within 10 days.
JoAnn Wiltz decided to bring her home and take care of Waffle until she was ready.
That same night, Waffles went into labor. It was a perfect Mother’s Day for Waffles, as she delivered her six puppies without any issues. JoAnn stayed by her side for hours while she gave birth.
Seeing her care for them so tenderly after everything she’d been through was truly heartwarming.
Hope For Paws, based in Los Angeles, continues to rescue animals and fight against abuse through education and outreach.
Thanks to their dedication, Waffles and her pups now have a safe place to call home, a new chapter filled with love and care.
It’s stories like Waffles’ that remind us of the kindness and compassion we can offer to those in need, both animal and human alike.
